Obama's speech on isis
1. Glad he's pretending at least, to be engaged in this limited way. He did a 180 about face, after saying the war on terror is over, pretending al quida is vanquished, calling Isis Jv and manageable. He obviously did it because the polls show he is falling faster and faster and Americans do not feel safe. Does anyone believe Obama will stick with this 3 months from now when America turns its attention to something else? Who really believes this can be done without ground troops?
2. GW Bush prophesied in 2007 Isis would happen if we pulled out totally from Iraq and it happened exactly as predicted. We keep troops in Korea and Germansy for decades. Now Obama will cause the same result in Afghanistan.
3. Islam was based on violence! Obama lies about it.
Obama's "not Islamic" Islamic State Claim Ridiculed
http://www.investigativeproject.org/4563/obama-not-islamic-islamic-state-claim-ridiculed.
President Obama's assertion Wednesday night that the Islamic State terrorist group "is not 'Islamic'" is drawing derision from a number of quarters. Author Sam Harris, an atheist who challenges all religions, went further, dismissing Obama's argument as a "scrim of pretense and delusion." "Which will come first, flying cars and vacations to Mars, or a simple acknowledgment that beliefs guide behavior and that certain religious ideas—jihad, martyrdom, blasphemy, apostasy—reliably lead to oppression and murder?" The Quran includes numerous passages encouraging violent jihad and inspiring hatred of non-believers, Harris notes. Robert Spencer offers specific examples here, and asks why the Islamic State has become such a magnet for wannabe jihadists if it was not seen as inherently Islamic. But instead of acknowledging those verses and debating their modern application, the president used a nationally televised speech to act as if they do not exist. Harris blames "a large industry of obfuscation designed to protect Muslims from having to grapple with these truths." It's a difficult sell, Pipes concludes, because of the clear theological statements and justifications Islamic State terrorists invoke for their brutality. "Anyone with eyes and ears realizes that the Islamic State, like the Taliban and al-Qaeda before it, is 100 percent Islamic. And most Westerners, as indicated by detailed polling in Europe, do have eyes and ears. Over time, they are increasingly relying on common sense to conclude that the group is indeed profoundly Islamic
4. He could not resist the added emphasis here that again, there would be no ground combat role. Never tell your enemies what you will not do, Mr. President.

Indiana congressional race pro Israel incumbent Walorski against pro terror candidate Joe Bock
Indiana congressional race pro Israel incumbent Walorski against pro terror candidate Joe Bock
Elections matter. Indiana Congressional district 2 pits very pro Israel
incumbent against very anti Israel pro BDS candidate. Support Warlorski (endorsed by the Protect Our Heritage Pac/ ( Midwest's largest pro israel pac) against Joe Bock. Israel and the world can't afford another anti Israel pro terrorist Congressman. " As Jewish voters and supporters of Israel, it is our duty and responsibility to know who we voting for. In this information age we cannot allow facts to be buried.
The voters of Indiana's 2nd Congressional district (our neighboring South Bend Region) have a critical decision as we approach our 2014 election cycle. I know I do not want a congressional representative who believes culpability for global terrorism lies on the backs of Israel and the US. Such is the case as Professor Joe Bock from Notre Dame is challenging the current Representative Jackie Warlorski. While Rep. Walorski has been among Israel's finest supporters in Congress, Joe Bock has a history of supporting pro-Palestinian anti-Israel institutions including Al-Quds University, Caritas Internationalis, and the UN's Division for Palestinian Rights.
Professor Bock openly exclaims injustices towards Palestinians without ever acknowledging the systematic terrorism Palestinians have engaged in. Bock advocates "Preaching the Word," a Catholic social doctrine that applies biblical justice to the Palestinians. Bock was assigned Country Representative for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Jerusalem-West Bank-Gaza program, and settled in East Jerusalem for 3 years, ending just before the 2nd Intifada. Bock's wife Susan Lyke, who is also outspokenly anti-Israel has written " I learned that Christians shouldn’t sit on the fence when (Israeli) injustice is at play."
Joe Bock and his wife Susan Lyke are members and supporters of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA), a Palestinian Christian organization based in Jerusalem. FOSNA serves as the “voice for Palestinian Christians” against Israel’s policies and has been a driving force behind various Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns against Israel, including those initiated by mainline Protestant churches in the U.S. They employ a “Palestinian liberation theology” which is based on the premise that the Bible’s explicit descriptions of the land of Israel as belonging to the Jewish people must be repudiated and redefined. Friends of Sabeel’s agenda calls for the right of return for Palestinian refugees, an end to American policies that support and give aid to Israel, and active engagement in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. Friends of Sabeel hosts large conferences on University campuses (including Notre Dame) featuring strong anti-Israel themes and speakers who accuse Israel of racism, oppression, and human rights violations. Their speakers have also depicted Israel as a systematically racist country comparing Israeli policies to Nazism. They outspokenly purport that the pro-Israel lobby is excessively powerful and that Israeli interests control the U.S. government’s foreign policy. Friends of Sabeel has similarly targeted high schools audiences throughout the U.S. in recent years. They sponsored an unsuccessful campaign in Minnesota against Israel Bonds stating it hoped their political efforts would be “replicated across the country to get state governments to pull their money out of investing in Israel.”
This Palestinian-Christian connection to other Christian groups is highly toxic, and a United States congressman that shares these views would have the ability to write and sponsor legislation that is very detrimental to Israel. How can we let this happen?
Does it even matter who is the "D" and who is the "R"? We can all agree that support for Israel must remain bipartisan. Although Bock is the "D" and Walorski is the "R" what matters is whether or not we can count on them to support, not vilify the only Jewish country.
In contrast U.S. Rep. Jackie Warlorski has emerged as one of Israel's strongest supporters. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, she has won bipartisan support for new measures increasing pressures on Iran. Upon returning from Israel last August Walorski stated “As Israel continues to experience constant terror threats from surrounding countries, the United States recognizes its special bond to Israel and is proud to be a strong ally. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I believe it is critical that the United States continues to focus on Israel’s security, particularly from the growing nuclear threat in Iran, to help stabilize the region and protect our own national security interests.” Both parties have identified this seat as a key battleground in 2014.
With the rise of anti-semitism and Iran on the verge of nuclear power, we Jews are living in turbulent times that call for unity and action. How we respond to the detractors will determine how pro-Israel we are, REALLY.

With whom is Obama enraged? Iran? Isis? Hamas? Jihad? Russia? China? Hezbolah? no. Israel
The President's Curious "Rage" at Israel - Bret Stephens WSJ
Barack Obama "has become 'enraged' at the Israeli government, both for its actions and for its treatment of his chief diplomat, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry." So reports the Jerusalem Post, based on the testimony of Martin Indyk, until recently a special Middle East envoy for the president. Israel has just been hit by several thousand rockets and 30-odd terror tunnels, a 50-day war, the forced closure of its one major airport, accusations of "genocide," and anti-Semitic protests throughout Europe. This is the country that is the object of the president's rage.
On July 15 Israel accepted the terms of a cease-fire crafted by Egypt. Hamas violated it by firing 50 rockets at Israel. On July 17 Israel accepted a five-hour humanitarian cease-fire. Hamas violated it again. On July 20 Israel allowed a two-hour medical window in the neighborhood of Shujaiyeh. Hamas violated it. On July 26 Hamas announced a daylong cease-fire. It then broke its own cease-fire. On July 28 Israel agreed to a cease-fire for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. The rocket attacks continued.
On Aug. 1 Israel accepted a 72-hour cease-fire proposed by the U.S. Hamas violated it within 90 minutes. On Aug. 5 Israel agreed to Egypt's terms for another three-day cease-fire. Hamas violated it several hours before it was set to expire. If Hamas had honored any of these cease-fires it could have saved Palestinian lives. (Wall Street Journal)

Obama’s Irrational Animus for Israel
Peter Wehner 08.28.2014 - 10:30 AM
According to the Jerusalem Post,
Speaking extensively on US relations with Jerusalem since the end of the latest round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians last April, and throughout Operation Protective Edge, a candid [former US special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations Martin] Indyk said at times US President Barack Obama has become “enraged” at the Israeli government, both for its actions and for its treatment of his chief diplomat, US Secretary of State John Kerry… Gaza has had “very negative impact” on US-Israel relations, he continued. “The personal relationship between the president and the prime minister has been fraught for some time and it’s become more complicated by recent events.”
Think about this for a moment. In a neighborhood featuring Hamas, ISIS, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran, just to name a few of the actors, President Obama was “enraged” at … Israel. That’s right, Israel–our stalwart ally, a lighthouse of liberty, lawfulness, and human rights in a region characterized by despotism, and a nation filled with people who long for peace and have done so much for so long to sacrifice for it (including repeatedly returning and offering to return its land in exchange for peace).
Yet Mr. Obama–a man renowned for his lack of strong feelings, his emotional equanimity, his disengagement and distance from events, who New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd refers to as “Spock” for his Vulcan-like detachment–is not just upset but “enraged” at Israel.
Add to this the fact that the conflict with Hamas in Gaza–a conflict started and escalated by Hamas, and in which Hamas used innocent Palestinians as human shields–had a very negative impact on America’s relationship with Israel. To show you just how absurd this has become, other Arab nations were siding with Israel in its conflict with Hamas. But not America under Obama. He was constantly applying pressure on Israel. Apparently if you’re a nation defending yourself and, in doing so, you wage a war with exquisite care in order to prevent civilian death, it is reason to earn the fury of Mr. Obama.
It’s clear to me, and by now it should be to others, that there is something sinister in Barack Obama’s constant anger aimed at Israel. No previous American president has carried in his heart this degree of hostility for Israel. We can only hope that no future president ever does again. It is a shameful thing to watch this ugliness and irrationality play itself out.

Obama 2 step plan 1. gut S military 2. Let Jihad flourish
Obama 2 step plan 1. gut S military 2. Let Jihad flourish
If I
were a jihadist who wanted to undermine the capacity of the United States of
America to both defend itself and/or to wage war on those who regard us as
their enemy, I would welcome what is currently occurring to weaken our
military. It is exactly what President Obama and a compliant Congress has been
doing for some time now.
.
An August 26 article in Politico reported that the five leading U.S.
defense firms, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing’s defense unit, and Northrop
Grumman, have eliminated 70,000 jobs since 2008 through layoffs, buyouts,
attrition, or, as Boeing did, moving employees to the commercial side of its
business
As reported by Bloomberg News in July, “The U.S. Navy can’t meet
its funding needs for surface warships and a new class of nuclear attack
submarines from 2025 to 2034 according to the service’s latest 30-year
shipbuilding plan.” The Navy is just one element of the Pentagon’s current
five-year funding plan “in an era of declining defense spending.” It will
impact the need for new submarines, the planned full production of F-35 fighter
jets, and a new long-range strike bomber.
In March The Washington Times reported that “President Obama is
seeking to abolish two highly successful missile programs that experts say have
helped the U.S. Navy maintain military superiority for the past several
decades.” Obama wants to eliminate the famed Tomahawk and Hellfire missile
programs. Why?
In January, commentator Mike Snyder raised the question, “Why are Dozens of High Ranking
Officers Being Purged from the U.S. Military?” He noted that “Since Barack Obama has
been in the White House, high ranking military officers have been removed from
their positions at a rate that is absolutely unprecedented. Things have gotten
so bad that a number of retired generals are publicly speaking out about the
‘purge’ of the U.S. military that they believe is taking place.”
Retired Major General Paul Vallely was quoted as having said,
“He’s intentionally weakening and gutting our military, Pentagon, and reducing
us as a superpower, and anyone in the ranks who disagrees or speaks out is
being purged.”
.
In July, Rowan Scarborough, a Washington Times columnist, warned
that “An independent panel appointed by the Pentagon and Congress said that
President Obama’s strategy for sizing the armed services is too weak for
today’s global threats.” The National Defense Panel called on the President to
“dump a major section of his 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review and write a
broader strategy that requires the military to fight on multiple fronts at
once.” That alone would require a larger military than we have now; one that is
the size it was prior to World War Two!
In May, The Washington Times reported that “These days, the U.S.
military is only taking twenty percent of the applicants who walk into their
local recruiter’s office intent on enlisting in the armed forces” noting that
“the tough environment for potential recruits is due in large part to troop
reductions in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the Pentagon’s plans to cut the
size of the active duty Army.” Cut the size? At a time when we may
need “boots on the ground” again in Iraq and a possible incursion into Syria?
Whether it is weapons systems needed by the Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marines and Coast Guard, the Obama administration has waged its own war
on America’s capacity to meet the needs of our national security currently and in
the years ahead. It has waged an effort to alter the makeup of our military
personnel, to reduce portions of it, and to eliminate many top officers to lead
it.
It isn’t just the Islamic State’s American hostages that are
being decapitated. It is the U.S. military.

Obama aids jihad in USA Steve Emerson Terrorism expert
we have an administration that's in bed with these radical Islamic groups who pretend to be moderate or civil rights groups that have basically curtailed the ability of the FBI, ICE agents, to monitor, do investigations, or even prosecutors. Prosecutors now have to petition the Department of Justice to use the word "jihad" in indictments. This shows you the extent to which this administration has neutered the whole campaign to stop jihadism and basically interfere, Monica, with the ability of FBI agents to do their job...,the FBI, city and state law enforcement and now the border patrol with essentially an open border with god knows what kind of terrorists and Islamists are coming over the southern border, how they have really been hamstrung by regulations and political correctness restricting their ability to monitor the Islamic communities and the border...this administration has essentially embraced and legitimized the Muslim Brotherhood, which is the godfather and parent of all Sunni terrorist groups, including Hamas, including Islamic Jihad, and Al Qaeda. And for the administration to make a distinction between Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood is simply murderous. And that's what they've done. They've lifted all restrictions on Muslim Brotherhood visits to the United States and now restricting entry of Israelis to US http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/us-state-dept-denying-israelis-entry-visas-record-level
Obama aids jihad around the world
1. Makes us more dependent on Arab oil that funds terror by severely limiting our domestic fuel development and use
2.Massive spread of Islamic jihad under his watch-
Libya: he helped push out Quaddafi, and now Libya in hands of various jihad groups
Iraq: pulled out after war was won opening way for ISIS
Syria: drew red lines and then ignored them when breached and now Isis controls half
Hamas: secret talks with this terrorist group while they toss missiles daily at Israel for 6 months and continued to fund PA even after the have unity government with Hamas
Iran: weakened sanctions consistently and now extends talks while they move forward tried to overthrow Mubarak and support Moslem Brotherhood, gave them 1.5 billion and sophisticated weapons
Turkey Obama’s favorite
foreign leader calls Israelis Nazis It is also no surprise that Obama would
name this vicious Jew-hater as his closest friend among world leaders. “Erdogan

It has long been obvious that it takes a lot of money to live in New York or San Francisco, while you can get along on much less in, say, Nebraska. But only in April of this year did the Bureau of Economic Analysis systematically compute real per capita income for each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. You can see the results for 2012, the only year published to date, here. For your convenience, I have uploaded the table. Here it is:
Not surprisingly, the most prosperous place in the U.S. is the District of Columbia, with a per capita real income (chained 2008 dollars) of $59,759. In the Age of Obama, lobbyists reign supreme. But what state ranks number one? North Dakota, with a real per capita income of $57,367. Sure, you say, it’s all that fracking. Yes, but look who is number five: oil-free South Dakota, at $48,626. Both of the Dakotas, on a real per capita basis, are higher-income than New York ($43,603), California ($38,888), Pennsylvania ($43,173), Illinois ($43,063), Maryland ($45,702), Virginia ($44,313), Washington ($42,164) and just about every other state.
A few blue states are prosperous: Connecticut is number two and Massachusetts is number four, edging out South Dakota but far behind North Dakota. But most of the country’s wealthiest states are red or purple: in addition to the Dakotas, Wyoming (#3), Nebraska (#6), Iowa (#7) and Kansas (#11). (Maybe Kansas isn’t so dumb after all.)
BEA also calculated how much each state gained in real per capita income between 2008 and 2012. You can make of this what you will, but the top ten, in order, were North Dakota (with a whopping 23% increase), West Virginia, Mississippi, Ohio, Rhode Island, Montana, Arkansas, South Dakota, Tennessee and New Hampshire.
It is noteworthy, too, that states like New York, California and Illinois have much more income inequality than states like the Dakotas. If we saw the same data using medians instead of averages, states like the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska, etc. would look even better.
While one should rarely draw sweeping conclusions from a single data set, these numbers do cause one to wonder: the blue model has plainly failed at the state level, so why would anyone want to implement it at the federal level?

Why jews are defecting
Why Obama is driving Jews from the Democratic party
August 17, 2014 | 4:47am
Modal Trigger

President Obama does not seem to take threats to Benjamin
Netanyahu's Israel very seriously — and that may cost the Dems.
Photo: Getty Images
A friend who is conservative and Jewish asks a question:
“Given Obama’s hostile treatment of Israel, isn’t it time for Jews to
have their Ronald Reagan moment?”
By that, he means when the Gipper said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.”
Without doubt, the party under Barack Obama has left those Jews who view Israel’s security as threatened.
Obama recently told a New York Times interviewer, “Because Israel is so capable militarily, I don’t worry about Israel’s survival.”
That’s shocking, considering Iran’s threat to wipe Israel off the map once it gets nukes. And even as Obama spoke, the Jewish state was in a mini-war with Hamas, which vows to eliminate Israel and is supported by Iran.
Obama apparently doesn’t take those aims seriously, perhaps believing they are only boob bait for the Muslim masses. But if “kill the Jews” is what the masses want to hear, why assume that isn’t official policy? After all, many thought Hitler wasn’t serious, either.
Israel can’t afford to assume its enemies will only talk the talk, so it must act as if those who say they want genocide really do. That’s why it doesn’t play tit-for-tat when it is attacked, and why it is so nervous about Iran.
But Obama’s lack of worry about Israel isn’t limited to his rhetoric, as The Wall Street Journal revealed. The president’s pique at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached a new high during the Hamas conflict, and Obama is now putting a squeeze on military shipments to Israel.
The State Department insists this is routine, nothing to see here, blah, blah, blah. Nonsense.
Even a “review” of American policy is a warning to Netanyahu and an invitation to his political opponents at home that their nation is at odds with its essential ally.
Some American supporters of Israel, including Democrats, are furious at Obama. And Israeli media report opposition pols there are blaming Netanyahu for “losing” America.
It is obvious Obama wants a liberal lapdog in Israel, a point underscored by his complaint to the Times’ Tom Friedman that Netanyahu’s poll numbers are very high. “Bibi is too strong,” Obama insisted, saying it insulated him from having to make the decisions Obama wants him to make.
In other words, the Israeli public is also wrong for supporting Netanyahu, and Obama knows what’s best for them. He said that to “preserve a Jewish state that is also reflective of the best values” of its founders, Israelis must “find a way to live side by side in peace with Palestinians . . . You have to recognize that they have legitimate claims and this is their land and neighborhood, as well.”
As a platitude, that could be harmless. But remember the context. In that statement, made during a war that Hamas started, Obama made Hamas a synonym for all Palestinians.
It’s not, unless he believes all Palestinians, including the relative moderates who govern the West Bank, share the Hamas goal of eliminating Israel.
He’s also undermining the long-standing policy of supporting moderate, peaceful Palestinians with the goal of freezing out the terrorists.
To say, as Obama does, that Israel must recognize that Hamas has “legitimate claims” is to reward it for starting the war. It transfers legitimacy and power from Palestinian moderates to the terrorists.
As one Israeli paper put it, “US livid with Israel? Hamas can’t believe its luck.”
So, is this the moment when American Jews realize the Democratic Party has left them?
Gallup surveyed 88,000 Americans through June and found that 55 percent of Jews approved of the president, while 41 percent disapproved. Among all religious groups, Muslims gave him the highest approval, at 72 percent.
The 55 percent Jewish approval marks a big decline from the 69 percent of the Jewish vote Obama got in 2012, and the 78 percent he got in 2008.
Despite what anti-Semites believe, not all Jews care equally about Israel, and certainly don’t agree on what is best for Israel. Other issues affect their vote as well.
Still, the well-being of the lone Jewish state is a significant factor for many, and they want a president who shares their concern. Given Obama’s recent hostile conduct and comments, a new poll likely would find his support falling even more.
It’s not a “Reagan moment,” but it’s getting closer.
That’s frightening.
Despite his huge lead in the polls, the 600,000 members of the New York State United Teachers will not endorse the governor or any of his opponents. And the state’s second largest union, the Public Employees Federation, went further by endorsing Cuomo’s far-left opponent in the party primary, Zephyr Teachout.
Another group, the Village Independent Democrats, pulled its endorsement of Cuomo running mate Kathy Hochul and switched to Teachout’s, Tim Wu.
Cuomo’s big lead in the polls and reputation for taking revenge couldn’t overcome his pursuit of reform policies the unions resisted. Although the teachers didn’t make an endorsement in the 2010 race, these groups are considered to be automatic supporters for an incumbent Dem.
The revolt is a reminder that Cuomo pushed Albany toward the center in major ways. His property-tax cap was designed to stop runaway spending and taxing, and his extraordinarily bold push for charter schools was a form of torture for the unions.
The governor’s erratic behavior on the Moreland Commission now overshadows those earlier accomplishments. But it is worth remembering that most New Yorkers favor the very policies the tax-and-spend Dems hate, so Cuomo should wear union rejection as a badge of honor.
The mayor has distinguished himself for parting company with his two predecessors. Where they saw cops as the solution, de Blasio tends to see them as the problem.
Not this time. Echoing top cop Bill Bratton, the mayor said that resisting arrest was foolish. “When a police officer comes to the decision that it’s time to arrest someone, the individual is obligated to submit to arrest,” he said.
It seems obvious, but cases from Staten Island to Missouri reveal that too many people think they can just say no. Thanks to the mayor for setting the record straight.

Still clueless on Snowden
Edward Snowden is a traitor, running to China and Russia with his stolen secrets. But the really scary part is the possibility that he’s telling the truth about something. Posing with an American flag, he claimed in an interview that intelligence officials still have no idea how much and exactly what he took. That’s frightening.
Unions revolt on Gov
Many New Yorkers believe Gov. Cuomo has been too generous to state unions and not tough enough on pensions and teacher evaluations. Obviously, the unions think he has been too tough.Despite his huge lead in the polls, the 600,000 members of the New York State United Teachers will not endorse the governor or any of his opponents. Blasio talkin’ cuff
Never say there is no good news. The Post’s front page on Mayor de Blasio defending cops was the best man-bites-dog story of the last seven months. The mayor has distinguished himself for parting company with his two predecessors. Democratic War on Poverty Has Been a Catastrophic Failure
This Chart Proves the War on Poverty Has Been a Catastrophic Failure

For the past 50 years, the government’s annual poverty rate has hardly changed at all. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 15 percent of Americans still live in poverty, roughly the same rate as the mid-1960s when the War on Poverty was just starting. After adjusting for inflation, federal and state welfare spending today is 16 times greater than it was when President Johnson launched the War on Poverty. If converted into cash, current means-tested spending is five times the amount needed to eliminate all official poverty in the U.S. How can the government spend so much while poverty remains unchanged?

The answer is simple: The U.S. Bureau of the Census official “poverty” figures are woefully incomplete. The Census defines a family as poor if its annual “income” falls below specific poverty income thresholds. In counting “income,” the Census includes wages and salaries but excludes nearly all welfare benefits. The federal government runs over 80 means-tested welfare programs that provide cash, food, housing, medical care, and targeted social services to poor and low-income Americans. Government spent $916 billion on these programs in 2012; roughly 100 million Americans received aid from at least one of them, at an average cost of $9,000 per recipient. (These figures do not include Social Security or Medicare.)
Of the $916 billion in means-tested welfare spending in 2012, the Census counted only about 3 percent as “income” for purposes of measuring poverty. In other words, the government’s official “poverty” measure is not helpful for measuring actual living conditions.
On the other hand, the Census poverty numbers do provide a very useful measure of “self-sufficiency”: the ability of a family to sustain an income above the poverty threshold without welfare assistance. The Census is accurate in reporting there has been no improvement in self-sufficiency for the past 45 years.

Ironically, self-sufficiency was President Johnson’s original goal in launching his War on Poverty. Johnson promised his war would remove the “causes not just the consequences of poverty.” He stated, “Our aim is not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it.” Johnson did not intend to put more Americans on the dole. Instead, he explicitly sought to reduce the future need for welfare by making lower-income Americans productive and self-sufficient.
By this standard, the War on Poverty has been a catastrophic failure. After spending more than $20 trillion on Johnson’s war, many Americans are less capable of self-support than when the war began. This lack of progress is, in a major part, due to the welfare system itself. Welfare breaks down the habits and norms that lead to self-reliance, especially those of marriage and work. It thereby generates a pattern of increasing inter-generational dependence. The welfare state is self-perpetuating: By undermining productive social norms, welfare creates a need for even greater assistance in the future. Reforms should focus on these programs’ incentive structure to point the way toward self-sufficiency. One step is communicating that the poverty rate is better understood as self-sufficiency rate—that is, we should measure how many Americans can take care of themselves and their families.
